Gates Chili Middle School students dominate in Rochester’s National Civics Bee, securing top spots with impressive civic knowledge and critical thinking skills, now advancing to the state qualifier in Albany

Rochester, New York – Three bright young minds from Gates Chili Middle School have emerged victorious in Rochester’s National Civics Bee local qualifier, securing their place in the next stage of the competition. Dante Capaldo took the top spot, followed closely by Daniel Rappazzo and Jessica D’Anunzio, both of whom also showcased impressive civic knowledge and critical thinking skills.
The event, hosted by the Greater Rochester Chamber in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and The Civic Trust, gave students a platform to engage with real-world issues and advocate for the changes they want to see in their communities.
The competition was no small feat. To even qualify, students had to submit thoughtful, well-researched essays on civics topics of their choosing. Those who advanced then tackled a rigorous multiple-choice quiz before stepping onto the stage for the final round—an intense verbal debate where they defended their positions on key civic issues. From local infrastructure improvements to public health and workforce development, the topics reflected the students’ deep concern for their community’s future.
Capaldo’s performance stood out, earning him the first-place title after demonstrating a strong grasp of civic principles and persuasive argumentation. Rappazzo and D’Anunzio also delivered compelling cases, proving their ability to think critically and articulate solutions to pressing societal challenges. Their success highlights not only their individual talent but also the strength of civic education at Gates Chili Middle School.
Now, the journey continues. Capaldo, Rappazzo, and D’Anunzio will advance to the New York State qualifier in Albany on May 30, where they will compete against other top students from across the state. The stakes are high—the winner of the state competition will earn a spot at the National Civics Bee and have a shot at a $1,000 cash prize.
The National Civics Bee, designed for middle school students in grades 6 through 8, aims to inspire young people to engage with government, policy, and community issues. It fosters civic awareness and leadership, ensuring that the next generation is equipped to contribute meaningfully to society. Programs like this reinforce the importance of civic education, encouraging students to think critically, engage in meaningful discourse, and become active participants in their communities.
