Man drowns trying to save dog in Erie Canal
Macedon, New York — A man jumped in the Erie Canal to rescue a dog and got caught in the current.
According to rescue crews, they responded to the canal lock in Macedon Tuesday morning just after 8:30 a.m.
Police say a man was fishing with his son when the dog fell into the water.
The man’s identity has not yet been released. His remains were recovered around 10 a.m.
The dog was rescued further down the canal. The boy remained on land and was not hurt. He has since been reunited with family.
“It’s a true tragedy for a young individual to have to experience that and witness it,” said Macedon Police Chief John Colella. “It’s a true tragedy for someone who does live in our community. We remind people that the canal is a beautiful resource, but it can also be a dangerous resource, so you have to be very careful around the water’s edge.”
