Events and festivities commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. are taking place throughout the Rochester region

Rochester, New York – Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, and the community is commemorating his legacy with a number of events.

King’s dedication to workers’ rights was celebrated Monday at Strong Memorial Hospital by the local healthcare workers’ union, 1199SEIU.

Spoken word, poetry, dance, and music acts by local community organizations were showcased at the 44th annual celebration.

1199SEIU was cited by the union as King’s preferred union, describing it as “the authentic conscience of the labor movement.”

On Monday, the Eastman Theatre hosted the 40th annual MLK Day celebration organized by the Greater Rochester Martin Luther King Jr. Commission.

King’s emphasis on the need for social, political, and economic fairness in America was mirrored in the celebration.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Choir performed at the occasion, and Adam Bello, the executive of Monroe County, and Malik Evans, the mayor of Rochester, were among the honorary guests.

On Monday, the community was given free dancing lessons in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day by Rochester’s renowned Garth Fagan dancing.

Every year since 1997, several age groups participated in learning more about Dr. King’s legacy and studying various dance styles.

According to Amya Brice, the administrator of the Garth Fagan Dance Academy, “Every year we try to have a day of free classes for students to take as a way to bring equality into the arts.” “It helps give a sense of what Martin Luther King Jr. wanted from all the work that he did.”
