Although there is still more to be done, Mayor Evans says the city is seeing a decline in gun violence

Rochester, New York – At a press conference centered on the city’s efforts to reduce crime and combat violence, Rochester Mayor Malik Evans gave a speech.
Evans claimed that, in contrast to certain other areas of the state, gun violence had decreased in Rochester. Since their peak in 2021, he emphasized improvements in three important gun-related measures. Shootings have decreased by 53% in the past three years. In addition, the number of shooting victims and fatal shootings has dropped by 51%, and the overall number of homicides, including non-gun-related ones, has dropped by 45%.
Despite these advancements, Evans stated that more work has to be done.
Even if these numbers have decreased, people have said, ‘Why don’t you loosen up on the state of emergency?’ I’m grateful but not yet pleased. We want to keep dramatizing and making people realize that any form of gun violence is wrong, therefore I said absolutely not,” he stated.
Evans agreed that as the city enters 2025, more work and advancements are required.
