Rochester to celebrate Italian heritage
Rochester, New York – Rochester will celebrate Italian Heritage Day on Sunday.
The proclamation, which honors the city’s Italian heritage, was issued by the mayor’s office on Friday.
“The time has come to recognize and appreciate the contributions of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds so that all members of our community can take pride in their history and culture while appreciating the pride that others take in their history and culture,” said Michael Cerretto, director of the emergency communications department.
As part of Orange Shirt Day celebrations, a local Italian-American group walked with members of the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Committee from the Liberty Pole to City Hall. Orange Shirt Day is a national holiday honoring children who were coerced into attending Native American boarding schools.
