The state provides funding to the Hornell Police Department for new equipment
Hornell, New York – Thanks to state funds, the Hornell Police Department will be updating some of its equipment.
The Hornell Police Department recently learned that it had received $188,647 in grant monies from New York State, according to the City of Hornell. Law enforcement organizations who wish to invest in and advance their technology are given tax dollars by the state; but, in order to be eligible for these funds, the organizations must apply. When applying, the Hornell Police Department and the Hornell Mayor’s Office provided specifics on the upgrades the department needs and how they will benefit the community.
The department plans to purchase three solar feedback signs, five tasers with rechargeable batteries to replace the department’s obsolete tasers, and two fully equipped police cars for vehicle and traffic enforcement with the newly acquired monies.
“We receive complaints about speeding motorists at entry points to the city; whether it’s motorists speeding up when departing the city, or traveling at an excessive speed when entering the city,” said Chief Ted Murray about the solar signs. “These signs will alert motorists of their speeds, and our department will continue to closely monitor these areas.”
In addition, the HPD plans to purchase five mobile thermal printers, two digital mobile radios, and new computer workstations for use throughout the department. The department’s present antiquated systems will be replaced with speedier and more effective advancements.
Two solar LED school zone signs will be the department’s last purchase made using the grant money. According to Murray, the school zone signs will make crossing Seneca Street safer by raising drivers’ awareness, particularly during rush hour.
In an effort to improve even further, the Hornell Police Department is looking into more grant opportunities.
