The National Weather Service reports that an EF0 tornado touched down in Canandaigua

Canandaigua, New York – Late on Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service verified that a tornado had made landfall in Canandaigua the day before.

With a maximum width of 75 yards, a maximum wind speed of 75 mph, and a length of 0.7 miles, the EF0 tornado made landfall on Monday at 4:48 p.m.

The storm felt like a scene out of a movie, according to Aaron Jordan, store manager at Spectrum on Eastern Boulevard.

“Very intense winds, lights went out, thought the building would collapse for a second, but we made it out alright,” he said.

Along Eastern Boulevard, power lines collapsed, causing damage to homes and businesses as well as power outages.

“It’s not the five people you turned away; it’s what they tell their neighbors, their daughters,” said Mat Jewell, owner of Kingdom Wellness and Dispensary. “Everything’s closed today, and that hurts worse than trying to be open and dealing with it.”

While workers are clearing the debris at Kershaw Park, the National Weather Service is evaluating the damage, according to the Ontario County Office of Emergency Management.

On the west side of Canandaigua Lake, RG&E is requesting that residents turn off their air conditioners and other non-essential equipment to conserve energy until Tuesday at nine o’clock at night. The utility stated that if demand is not decreased, it will have to impose an outage that will delay service until Wednesday night owing to substantial pole damage.

During Monday’s storm, golf-ball-sized hail fell in Farmington. Farmington resident Chris Mandrino, owner of Project LeanNation in Canandaigua, described the entire event as unreal.

“It was definitely loud. The winds were pretty high, and I had a few dents on my truck but outside of that it was just a typical rain storm,” said Chris Mandrino, the owner of Project LeanNation. “But when I showed up and saw all the telephone poles that were snapped off, I’m like ‘It was a lot worse.'”
