Seneca Park Zoo welcoming two new giraffes

Rochester, New York – Seneca Park Zoo will welcome two new Masai giraffes soon!

On the advice of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, three-year-old female Kura and one-year-old male Elliot were moved from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

This action is a component of the Breeding suggestion in the Species Survival Plan, which gives AZA-accredited institutions the ability to manage various species.

The two giraffes will be living in the zoo’s tower with Iggy, JD, and Olmsted. The giraffe Pippi, a female, was recently sent to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo from Seneca Park Zoo.

There will be times when the Animals of the Savanna barn is closed so that Animal Care personnel may watch Kura and Elliot while they adjust to their new environment.

Because of their fragmented populations brought about by poaching, habitat loss, and human encroachment, Masai giraffes are listed as endangered.

Since its launch in 2018, Seneca Park Zoo has been a participant in the AZA Giraffe SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) initiative.

The zoo lost one of its giraffes, Kipenzi, to a cancerous tumor on her jaw, which is why this addition was made.
