Residents of Rochester invited to a public event aimed at raising awareness on gun violence, where they will also sign the End Gun Violence Pledge, committing to collective action in fostering safer streets

Rochester, New York – In a concerted effort to combat gun violence, the city of Rochester is inviting the public to a significant event at Parcel 5, located at 285 E Main Street. The event, scheduled for Friday, June 6, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., aims to raise awareness and encourage community involvement in addressing this critical issue.
The day’s activities will kick off with a march starting at 1 p.m., symbolizing a united front against gun violence. The event is open to all with no admission fee, emphasizing inclusivity and community participation. Attendees are encouraged to wear orange, a color that has become synonymous with the movement against gun violence, to show their solidarity.
Throughout the event, participants will enjoy an array of food vendors and live entertainment, creating a vibrant atmosphere for community engagement. A highlight of the day will be the special proclamations by Mayor Malik Evans and Monroe County Executive Adam Bello, who are expected to address the crowd and reinforce the community’s commitment to this cause.
Moreover, attendees will have the opportunity to sign the End Gun Violence Pledge, a tangible expression of their commitment to being part of the solution in reducing gun-related incidents.
Behind these efforts is the Office of Violence Prevention (OVP), led by Director Zequa Tookes. The OVP serves as the central hub for initiatives aimed at curbing violence and promoting safety throughout Rochester. It coordinates with various city departments and community-based organizations, fostering internal and external partnerships that are crucial for the success of its mission.
Among the key programs spearheaded by OVP are Pathways to Peace and the Office of Neighborhood Safety. Pathways to Peace includes street outreach by trusted workers who engage directly with those at risk, mediating conflicts and guiding them towards safer alternatives. They also provide crucial school-based support in nine Rochester City School District schools, collaborating with school staff and families to create support plans and foster a positive environment.
The Office of Neighborhood Safety focuses on city-wide efforts to bolster community safety through preventative strategies and partnerships. This initiative ensures a cohesive approach by acting as a bridge between city resources and community needs, building trust and enhancing safety measures effectively.
Furthermore, the Rochester Peace Collective, which supports over 30 grassroots organizations, and the Advance Peace – Peacemaker Fellowship, are pivotal in the city’s fight against gun violence. The Peace Collective facilitates resources and collaboration opportunities, empowering local groups to implement tailored interventions. Meanwhile, the Peacemaker Fellowship focuses on mentoring individuals most impacted by gun violence, fostering personal transformation and reducing gun-related incidents.
This comprehensive approach underscores Rochester’s commitment to creating a safer environment and the crucial role community participation plays in achieving this goal. By coming together at events like the one at Parcel 5 and participating in impactful programs, Rochester’s residents are taking important steps towards a peaceful and safer future.
