Overdoses in Steuben County decline in November
Steuben County, New York – In comparison to prior months, there were fewer overdoses reported in Steuben County in November.
Four of the 17 overdoses recorded in the county in November were treated with Narcan, according to the Steuben County Public Health Department. No fatalities from overdoses were reported.
Records for nine of the overdoses in November either did not specify a specific substance or the health department did not have access to that information. Three of the overdoses were suspected to have been caused by opioids, five were caused by other substances, and the remaining nine were not.
Compared to earlier fall months, November saw a much lower number of overdoses—31 were reported in September and 28 in October. Furthermore, January had only 12 overdoses reported, making it the only month this year with less. The health department reports that November saw fewer overdoses than the same month the previous year.
“Compared to 2023, there are fewer suspected overdoses and fatalities through November 2024,” stated Public Health Director Darlene Smith. We are happy to see that this is in line with both state and national trends. To further lower substance usage in the community, Steuben County Public Health and its partners are still advocating for and implementing new programs.
