Officer fires weapon after suspect strikes police car
The Rochester Police Department is investigating after an officer was involved in a shooting early Sunday morning.
Two RPD officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle around 5 a.m. on Dewey Avenue.
During the traffic stop, police say the suspect put the vehicle in reverse and struck the officer’s vehicle while the officers were standing in the open door jamb of the vehicle. One officer fired at least one round striking the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect then attempted to flee the area but struck a metal railing. Shortly after, the suspect was taken into custody.
The suspect was not struck by the officer’s gunfire. However, police say the suspect did complain of minor leg pain that was caused by the crash but refused medical attention at the scene.
The two officers involved in the traffic stop were not injured.
Lexington Avenue was closed from Finch to Maryland Streets but has since reopened.
