Monroe County Legislature races – new candidates challenging current incumbents

Rochester, New York – Two candidates declared Thursday that they are challenging the existing incumbents in the 22nd and 16th Districts of the Monroe County Legislature this coming election cycle.

Mercedes Vazquez-Simmons says she is running for the seat in the 22nd District of the Legislature, which is currently held by Vince Felder, the Democratic Legislator.

Vazquez-Simmons, who has worked as a North Clinton neighborhood advocate, says she wants to concentrate on efforts to build opportunities to help give the community a boost.

“Our community needs and deserves better,” she said. “I am committed to putting forth an aggressive work plan that will tackle many of the issues that our community has faced.”

Democrat Dave Long, meanwhile, has declared his candidacy for the 16th Legislative District. The seat is currently occupied by the President and Republican of the Legislature, Dr. Joe Carbone.

Long currently serves as the president of the West Irondequoit School Board and the University of Rochester Medical Center program administrator.

In a statement, Long said, “Now more than ever, it is critical to be represented in the Monroe County Legislature by someone who will work collaboratively to unite rather than divide our community. Issues like systemic racism, access to healthcare, economic disparity have been brought to the forefront, and we must have strong and community-minded County leadership to help ensure essential services are provided where and when needed.”
