Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich was joined by Greece Town Board Members Mike Barry, Josh Jensen, Bill Murphy, and Diana Christodaro for the official ground breaking ceremony of the Children’s Library Expansion Project. This project is a culmination of several months of planning to create a new state-of-the-art space for our young residents.

Because of COVID restrictions, the entire event will be made available to the public on Supervisor Reilich’s Facebook Page and the Town of Greece Website.

Also in attendance for the Ground Breaking Ceremony were Library Board Members, Library personnel, and representatives from all of the project construction and design teams involved in the expansion project.

In October 2000, the Ribbon was officially cut on the library and in its day it was considered state-of-the-art. The final payment on the library was made in November, 2019. In July, 2008, renovations were made to the children’s area, which included an expansion of the collection, more computer spaces and a new color scheme. However, the footprint of the original building has not changed until now.

The addition will be paid in cash and, because of careful planning and budgeting, will not require any borrowing.

“The Town of Greece is home to nearly 100,000 residents. Roughly more than 300,000 patrons pass through the doors of our library each year and this number is trending upward” said Supervisor Reilich. “While many of you have seen the dramatic improvements made on the Town Hall Campus, this one is sure to wow the families and taxpayers of Greece. Residents have asked for expanded features and amenities, and once again the Town Board and I are happy to answer the call”.

COVID has certainly been a factor that has changed many people’s lives, many more are sticking close to home and that helped solidify the decision to move forward with this project which actually was well in the planning stages before March.

The Children’s Library Expansion, located in the Greece Public Library Main Branch at 2 Vince Tofany Boulevard, included an additional 6,575 square feet, for a total of 10,125 square feet of the Children’s Library area. New features include a covered outdoor children’s story time patio, a mezzanine play area, energy efficient LED lighting, dedicated children’s bathroom, a new story and craft room, centrally located staff offices, new play area rotunda, skylights and added natural lighting, and new children’s librarian reference desk.
