Longtime LGBTQ+ activist Evelyn Bailey honored by Monroe County
Rochester, New York – By declaring June 14 “Evelyn Bailey Day,” on Tuesday, Monroe County honored longtime LGBTQ+ activist, educator, and historian Evelyn Bailey.
In 1985, Bailey joined the Gay Alliance and held numerous leadership roles, including historian.
She worked to digitize the archives of The Empty Closet in that role, the oldest continually published gay newspaper in New York state.
“You have made the history, not I. I have documented it,” Bailey said. “You are the ones that walk every single day creating your own lives authentically and with honesty and integrity.”
Bailey also received a certificate of special recognition from the House of Representatives.
“Evelyn Bailey’s efforts to ensure the stories of our LGTBQ+ residents who fought for equality, health care, marriage, and the right to live their authentic lives will live on forever,” Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said in a statement. “Bailey is a trailblazer and pioneer. We proudly and loudly celebrate our local LGTBQ+ community thanks to her lifelong efforts.”
Next month, more Pride celebrations are planned for Monroe County, including the Pride Parade on July 16 on Park Avenue.
