Amid second-alarm fire, a man calls 911, assaults officers
Rochester, New York — On Monday morning – amid fire at a high-rise apartment building, a man reportedly assaulted three officers.
According to police, the officers were responding to a 911 call at the building near Alexander Street just before 5:30 a.m. Monday.
When they knocked on the apartment door, a man answered and started hitting them with a blunt object.
More officers responded and the man was taken into custody. After they saw heavy smoke was pouring out of the apartment so they evacuated nearby apartments and called firefighters.
According to The Rochester Fire Department, it was a second-alarm fire due to the size of the building and the number of people inside. It took about 20 minutes to get the fire under control. Damage was contained to one apartment. Three officers were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening. Charges are pending against the man.
The Rochester Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.
