Rochester, New York – According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the delta variant acts like a completely different virus.

According to Dr. Emil Lesho with Rochester Regional Health, this new report emphasizes the importance of masks and vaccines in stopping the spread.

The new information says the delta variant is more transmissible than the common cold and just as contagious as chickenpox. The report adds that some vaccinated people could still spread it.

“When the virus first came out…one person could potentially infect two to three more people. What we’re seeing with the Delta variant is that one person can infect up to eight or nine more people, and that’s why they’re saying it’s as contagious as chickenpox,” said Dr. Lesho.

Dr. Lesho says he agrees with the recommendations requiring masks to be worn in schools this fall. His other big concern is the rise in cases of children under 12 in Monroe County.

New York state is still reviewing the CDC’s new recommendation and has yet to make an announcement surrounding the guidelines.
