U.S. Army Sgt. Gary Beikirch who inspired others is remembered
Greece, New York — On Saturday morning in a funeral service at the First Bible Baptist Church on Manitou Road U.S. Army Sgt. Gary Beikirch, who was awarded a Medal of Honor for his heroic work as a medic during the Vietnam War, was remembered.
Beikirch was an ordained minister and longtime guidance counselor in the Greece Central School District. He also became well known for his tireless work as an advocate for veterans.
He wrote a book “Blaze of Light,” published in 2020.
In his book, he describes the life-changing battle that led him to receive the medal, and how he found healing after the war.
Beikirch died on Dec. 26, 2021, while battling cancer. He was 74 years old.
In his name, a portion of Highland Park has been dedicated.
