Syracuse Fire Department Receives $488,195 Federal Grant To Reduce Cancer Risks

The Syracuse Fire Department (SFD) today announced being named an award recipient of a $488,195 Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) to install new exhaust removal systems in all City of Syracuse fire stations.
This grant will allow for the installation of modern, efficient source capture exhaust systems that will help reduce the risk of firefighters contracting chemical-related illnesses, including cancer. Firefighters face a 15% greater risk of dying from cancer in comparison to the general population, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
The new systems will use a series of hoses to remove all of the exhaust from the fire stations every time a vehicle is turned on. They will replace an obsolete set of systems that were installed almost 25 years ago.
“The AFG grant received strong support from our State and Federal elected officials,” said Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds. “We appreciate their assistance in the Department’s fight against cancer and other chemical-related illnesses.”
