Rochester Regional Health pediatrician discusses the rise in COVID-19 cases in children
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — One trend we’re seeing here in Monroe County and across the country is an uptick in the number of children getting COVID-19.
For the first time since the pandemic, children represent 20% of the new weekly COVID-19 cases nationally, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Last week, there were 88,497 new child COVID-19 cases reported nationally and children represented 20.6% (88,497/429,727) of the new weekly cases
On Friday, the Monroe County’s Health Department reported 16 new cases in kids under 10 years old and 44 new cases in 10 to 19-year-olds.
News10NBC spoke to Rochester Regional Health Pediatrician Dr. Steven Schulz about the recent uptick.
Dr. Schulz says more contagious COVID-19 variants could also be playing a role in the uptick in cases.
