Rochester Institute of Technology’s Hale-Andrews Student Life Center undergoes major renovations, including new fitness spaces and upgraded facilities, to meet the growing demand for recreational activities

Rochester, New York – At the Hale-Andrews Student Life Center (SLC) on the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) campus, a wave of enhancements and expansions has significantly broadened the scope of recreational and wellness activities available to students. This semester, the center has seen a surge in usage due to these improvements, which were largely driven by student feedback and designed to cater to a wide range of interests and fitness levels.

Recent renovations at the SLC include the transformation of two racquetball courts into versatile fitness rooms. These new spaces are now bustling hubs where students engage with personal trainers, attend specialized classes like strength training, or participate in club meetings. This addition not only diversifies the types of exercises available but also alleviates the congestion often experienced at the Wiedman Fitness Center, a neighboring facility known for its extensive multilevel gym and weight room.

Another significant upgrade is the renovation of the elevated running track. Reopened in January, the new rubber track spans an eighth of a mile and circles above the basketball courts, replacing the original track installed when the building first opened in 1992. This has quickly become a favored spot for runners and joggers, providing a year-round option regardless of weather conditions.

The SLC’s commitment to accommodating a variety of recreational pursuits is evident in its newer installations as well. A state-of-the-art golf simulator has been introduced, allowing golf enthusiasts to practice their swing indoors. Additionally, the billiards area has been expanded with a third pool table to meet the growing demand from early risers and league players. According to David Stevens, director of the Center for Recreational Sports, the billiards equipment was checked out 4,000 times last year, a number that doesn’t include many regular players who bring their own gear.

Visitor numbers have hit an all-time high this semester, with the center recording over 550,000 annual visits in the past two years. Stevens highlighted that about 91 percent of these visits are from current students, while the rest are faculty, staff, and alumni. The duration of visits has also increased, with visitors now spending an average of 88 minutes per visit, up from 71 minutes in 2021. Stevens attributes this to the center’s evolving role as a community space where students not only come for physical activity but also to socialize and relax.

To further enhance the welcoming atmosphere, the SLC has added amenities like dart boards and air hockey tables, catering to those looking for lighter, more social activities. This initiative aligns with Stevens’ vision of making the center a welcoming space for individuals from all backgrounds and fitness levels.

Jennifer Lewis, associate director of Recreational Facilities, emphasized that the redesigns and additions were directly influenced by student input.

“We asked members of several student organizations what would be a priority for them,” she said. The new spaces were designed to accommodate their requests and be utilized as much as possible.

Moreover, the center’s impact extends beyond current students. Alumni often return, reflecting fondly on the facilities as some of the best they had access to during their college years. The SLC’s broad range of facilities and the inclusive environment it fosters not only enhance student life on campus but also serve as a significant draw for prospective students, showcasing RIT’s commitment to supporting student wellness and engagement.
