Rochester airport to undergo $38.1M renovation
Rochester, New York – On June 28, Governor Kathy Hochul visited Rochester to declare that work on a $38.1 million project to update Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport had begun.
The project was first announced in September 2022 and is funded in part by the state through the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition. Additionally, $16.8 million in government monies will be allocated for the project, which aims to improve the facility’s use and navigation.
“I’m so proud to be able to make investments that transform this airport into a modern, efficient, welcoming space,” Hochul said in a morning presser.
The main terminal’s entryway, ticketing, and baggage claim sections will all be improved as part of the project scope with new signage, LED lights, and natural lighting. A brand-new smartphone app will offer comprehensive information on issues including parking, concessions, and flight activity in one place.
Improvements to the HVAC system, refurbishments to the baggage belt and freight building, changes to the elevator, four new jet bridges, and a new parking guidance system are additional components of the passenger experience. Additionally, the front canopy will be extended.
The antiquated Veterans Area of the terminal has been restored, and a Frederick Douglass Legacy Area has been established to educate guests about the life and legacy of the abolitionist who has been the airport’s namesake since 2021. There will be interactive features and artifact exhibits in both locations.
“It is deeply gratifying to know that visitors who pass through our community on their way to enjoy the splendor of the Finger Lakes will see firsthand how the people of Rochester and Monroe County remain committed to the legacy of Frederick Douglass and his message of freedom and justice,” said Rochester Mayor Malik Evans in a statement.
In a statement, U.S. Representative Joe Morelle, D-Irondequoit, stated that the airport has to demonstrate Rochester’s standing as a premier travel destination.
“This investment—utilizing millions in federal funding—will help ensure a seamless passenger experience and honor the legacy of Frederick Douglass that is woven into the fabric of our entire region,” Morelle said.
The goal is to have the project finished by the summer of 2025.
