New York’s single-day COVID-19 positivity rate drops below 1.5%

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — New York state’s single-day COVID-19 positivity rate dropped to 1.49%, dipping below 1.5% for the first time since Oct. 28, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Sunday.
The governor also announced the statewide seven-day average positivity rate dropped to 1.84%, the lowest since Nov. 6.
“Every single day, New York State is moving forward in the footrace between the infection rate and the vaccination rate,’ Cuomo said in a statement. “More New Yorkers are getting vaccinated and hospitalizations are declining, which is good news, but we need New Yorkers to stay vigilant to make sure we don’t lose any of the progress we’ve made.”
According to state data, 2,535 people are hospitalized, down 194 from the day before, with 637 in the ICU, also down by 21. Thirty-three more people died from the coronavirus, bringing the total number of deaths in New York state to 42,051 since the start of the pandemic.
The Finger Lakes region’s seven-day average percentage of positive test results is 2.81%.
Cuomo said 1.2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to New Yorkers across the state over the past seven days, including 93,940 in the last 24 hours.
“Even as the spring season is in full swing and more people want to get outside and enjoy the warm weather, the footrace between the infection rate and the vaccination rate is still on,” Cuomo said. “I remind all New Yorkers who still need to get the vaccine that it’s the only way to show support for our health providers who work tirelessly to get shot into people’s arms – and for everyone in their community who is vulnerable to this virus.”
While all New Yorkers 16 years old and older are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, only the Pfizer vaccine is approved for 16- and 17-year-olds.
All state-run mass vaccination sites and Monroe County-run clinics are now open to eligible New Yorkers for walk-in vaccination on a first-come, first-serve basis. People who would prefer to schedule an appointment at a state-run mass vaccination site can do so on the Am I Eligible App or by calling 1-833-NYS-4-VAX.
According to the state, 46.5% of New Yorkers have received at least one vaccine dose, and 34.9% have completed the vaccine series.
