New 15,000-square-foot terminal at Sullivan County International Airport features sustainable design, panoramic views, and modern traveler amenities

Sullivan County, New York – In a significant move towards modernizing transportation infrastructure in upstate New York, Governor Kathy Hochul recently updated the public on the near completion of the transformative project at Sullivan County International Airport. This initiative is poised to rejuvenate the airport into a cutting-edge gateway, promising to bolster economic growth and enhance tourism within the Catskill Region.
The project, which commenced in March 2023, is part of a broader effort under Governor Hochul’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition. A substantial funding of $18.5 million has been allocated to this project from a total pool of $230 million earmarked for various upstate airports. The funds, managed by the New York State Department of Transportation, have facilitated the construction of a new 15,000-square-foot terminal at Sullivan County International Airport, which will replace the outdated facility originally built in the mid-20th century.
The new terminal is designed with modern architectural elements, featuring energy-efficient materials and technologies. Among these are laminated timber beams and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that not only ensure sustainability but also offer visitors panoramic views of the picturesque Catskill Mountains and the bustling airport runway. A highlight of this facility is the incorporation of an all-electric HVAC system paired with geothermal wells, which replaces the older, less efficient furnace.
Enhancements also include a variety of amenities aimed at improving the experience for travelers and visitors alike. These enhancements feature upgraded restrooms, a new restaurant and bar with an adjoining deck that provides a view of the runway, and a pilot’s lounge designed to cater to the needs of passengers and private aircraft operators. Additional facilities such as office spaces for aviation-related businesses, car rentals, and a new conference room are included to accommodate various business and organizational needs.
“Our airports serve as vital gateways to our communities that invite visitors and drive local economies by facilitating tourism and generating opportunities for business development,” Governor Hochul said. “The ongoing transformation happening at Sullivan County International Airport and the eight other airports that received funding from our revitalization initiative sends a signal that our upstate cities and towns are open for business and available for community members and visitors to explore, enjoy and return to again and again.”
The project not only promises improved infrastructure but is also a boon for local employment, creating approximately 260 jobs during its implementation. The array of upgrades, including new solar panels, an enhanced fire suppression system, upgraded electrical systems with EV charging stations, and an improved parking facility, underline a comprehensive approach to modernizing the airport in alignment with contemporary needs and environmental sustainability.
As the project nears completion this spring, it stands as a testament to New York State’s proactive stance in upgrading its transportation facilities and boosting the regional economy through strategic investments in infrastructure.
