Rochester, New York — One day after Gov. Kathy Hochul enacted a State of Emergency for New York, members of the National Guard have come to Monroe County.

Saturday morning, Monroe Community Hospital, the largest stand-alone nursing home in the region, received the first cohort of National Guard. According to Monroe County Hospital Executive Alyssa Tallo, the facility, which is licensed for 566 beds, is slated to receive 26 medics in total.

“A need was recognized, and we’re very thankful to have them here to help us meet a need,” said Tallo.

Now, members of the Guard are here to staff healthcare facilities, like Monroe Community Hospital, to help free up space at local hospitals. Rehabilitation facilities and nursing homes have not been able to accept patients ready to leave the hospital because of lack of staff.

The Guard’s arrival comes just days after the omicron variant was detected downstate. Monroe County is under its own State of Emergency due to rising COVID cases and hospitalizations.
