Rochester, New York — The FBI is recognizing a local school leader for his efforts in combatting crime, terrorism, drugs, and violence.

Dr. Shaun Nelms was recognized for his work over the years as East High School’s superintendent.

Nelms was honored with the 2021 Director’s Community Leadership Award.

According to officials, in the past decade, he has been able to transform the school through a partnership with the U of R.

Supporting students has always been his goal, Nelms said. He recited an African proverb in his acceptance speech.

“The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth,” said Nelms. “I will forever dedicate myself to the mission of uplifting our community and making Rochester’s community ever better.”

Since 2014, the graduation rate has gone from 29% to above 80%. It’s just one measurement of East High’s success under Nelms’ leadership.
