Devils hire former Amerks coach Chris Taylor as assistant

Chris Taylor is receiving his first full-time National Hockey League coaching opportunity less than five months after he and his staff were fired by the Buffalo Sabres.
Taylor, who spent three seasons as head coach of the Rochester Americans, was hired Friday as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils. The 48-year-old will work under his former coach, Lindy Ruff, who was hired by the Devils in July. Taylor played under Ruff for parts of four seasons in Buffalo from 1999-2004.
Taylor had the Amerks on pace for a third consecutive playoff appearance when the season was halted in March in response to the coronavirus pandemic. He and the Sabres verbally agreed to a contract extension before former General Manager Jason Botterill was fired in June.
Taylor and his assistant coaches, Gord Dineen and Toby Petersen, were among 22 hockey operations employees fired.
