Blood supply shortage across region
Rochester, New York – In more than a decade the American Red Cross is seeing its lowest blood supply levels.
Donors of all blood types, especially Type O, and platelet donors are urged to make an appointment to give now to help meet the needs of patients – especially leading into the holiday season.
According to the Red Cross, this shortage is a combination of fewer donors and higher demand.
“Every two seconds, someone is in need of blood,” said Meg Rossman, regional communications manager for the American Red Cross of Western New York. “Over the course of the next two weeks to help meet and keep up with that demand, we actually need to collect about 10,000 additional units on what we would typically collect each week to be able to address the needs of those patients in need of blood.”
According to the Red Cross, those who donate between Nov. 1 and Nov. 23 will receive a $10 Amazon gift card. Donate between Nov. 1 and Nov. 12 and the Red Cross says you’ll be entered to win a trip for two to Hawaii.
