Absentee ballot requests fumbled by unclear state regs, results in thousands being told to reapply before Election Day

Thousands of voters in New York who already applied for an absentee ballot may have to do it again.
Some voters in several New York counties, including Monroe and Orleans, have received letters in recent weeks notifying them that prior absentee applications were invalid and urged them to reapply, according to the D&C.
The confusion comes down to issues related to the pandemic, and how applications are being processed.
Officials say it comes down to this: If you checked ‘temporary illness’ as the reason for requesting an absentee ballot between June’s primary and August 20th – there is a good chance that another request will need to be made.
“There was a time period between the Primary and August 20th where there was no COVID-19 excuse available to request an absentee ballot,” Board of Elections spokesman John Conklin told Gannett.
