New York DMV issues warning about text message rebate scam
New York – According to AAA, gas prices are continuing to go down. Officials say scammers are taking advantage of the situation.
The national average is now down to $4.69 per gallon according to AAA. That’s much lower than a month ago when the average was $4.97 for a gallon of regular gas.
The state average in New York has fallen to $4.81 per gallon, that’s a $.16 drop from Friday.
According to the New York DMV, scammers are sending people text messages falsely claiming that the state is offering $1,500 rebates as a result of high fuel prices.
The government does not send out text messages asking for personal information, the agency says.
