Rep. Joe Morelle calls for federal intervention
Rochester, New York – In order to take action to address the recent surge in gun violence in the Rochester community, Congressman Joe Morelle called on the U.S. Department of Justice.
After a record 81 homicides were recorded last year, so far, the city has recorded 31 homicides in 2022.
Morelle outlined steps the Department of Justice should take to protect the community, and urged collaboration across all levels of government.
The steps include building on last year’s VIPER task force, aimed at combating increases in gun violence.
According to a recent study from RIT’s Center for Public Safety Initiatives, no other city’s per-capita homicide rate has increased at a faster rate than Rochester over the past two years.
