COVID-19 surge in the Monroe County Jail is continuing to get worse
Rochester, New York – Currently, there are 124 COVID infections inside the jail.
Positive cases in just the past two days have gone up by more than 40%.
The sheriff’s office is now testing staff two times a week in order to try and stop the spread. Inmates are being tested weekly.
Just 187 inmates are fully vaccinated.
Deputies are trying to get that total up by encouraging inmates to get the shot, as that number is low.
“We got 701 inmates in our custody as of this morning,” Capt. James McGowan from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said. “We have to be proactive with the mental health of our inmates too when they’re dealing with a pandemic.”
At this time, social visitations have been paused, and each inmate has a tablet that they are able to use to call and text with loved ones for free.
