Man struck and killed by Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy
Perinton, New York – On Friday, a man was killed when he was struck by a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy.
A 32-year-old Wesley Soper of Perinton was crossing Route 31 when he was hit by a patrol car driven by Deputy Michael Houlihan.
Houlihan has been a deputy for a little over three years.
According to the sheriff’s office, MCSO’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating, including identifying witnesses, looking for and reviewing video footage, reviewing body-worn camera video and dispatch audio, and inspecting the vehicle.
The preliminary investigation shows Houlihan was driving 47 mph in a 45 mph zone, according to MCSO.
“We are currently waiting on accident reconstruction to calculate speed based on tech work,” according to a statement. “The vehicle’s airbags did not deploy and the vehicle’s black box did not start a separate incident to record his speed.
According to New York Attorney General Letitia James, her office is investigating, per state law, which requires such an inquiry in the event of a death caused by a police officer.
