Due to merger with Price Chopper, Tops Markets will close a dozen stores
New York – Tops Friendly Markets will be shutting down a dozen locations across the state, after completing a merger with Price Chopper/Market 32.
The merger itself was recently approved by regulators, giving the new, unified company the green light to move forward.
The Tops locations being closed are mostly in the eastern half of New York. Cortland, Cooperstown, Norwich, Owego, Warrensburg, Lake Placid, Rome, and Sherrill will all have locations shuttered.
“It’s simple: More choices and competition at the supermarket mean better prices and more savings for consumers,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said.
James is now running for governor. “As many New Yorkers continue to suffer the financial impact of the COVID-19 public health crisis, the last thing that should be happening is for supermarkets to let an anticompetitive merger cut choices and raise prices.”
All of the stores will be shut down within a six-week window.
