Arrest made in fatal Canandaigua hit-and-run
Canandaigua, New York — According to Canandaigua Police Chief Mathew Nielsen, an arrest has been made in a deadly hit-and-run in Canandaigua from late October.
Saturday afternoon officers arrested 54-year-old Todd Smith, of Canandaigua, Nielsen said.
Smith was arrested for vehicular manslaughter in the second degree, leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death, and driving while intoxicated.
According to the Sheriff’s Office reports, the arrest of Smith was part of a three-week investigation involving the hit-and-run accident that occurred on October 23, 2021.
The accident resulted in the death of 62-year-old Edwin Wesley, a disabled individual who was operating his scooter while crossing South Main Street in a marked crosswalk.
It is alleged that Smith was operating his 1956 Ford green pick-up truck while intoxicated when he struck Wesley and fled the scene without reporting the accident to the authorities.
Wesley was airlifted by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital where he later died of his injuries.
Later, Smith was taken to the Ontario County CAP Court for arraignment and was remanded to the Ontario County Jail on $10000 cash bail, $20000 secured bond, or $30000 partial secured bond.
