New bill would change gas-powered lawn equipment with electric-powered equipment
Malta, New York — Many people have traditional gas-powered mowers weed whackers, and leaf blowers, and when they quit working, people go buy another one if they can’t be fixed.
The proposed legislation being discussed in its current form will require these yard tools and mowers to be powered by electricity as the focus on fighting climate change takes on another dimension to help clean up the air.
According to Sen. Pete Harckum the bill “…will require the all in-state sales on new lawn care and landscaping equipment such as mowers, leaf blowers, and trimmers to be zero emissions by 2027.”
Sen. Liz Krueger (D) is working on a bill to create a rebate program for the purchase of electric landscaping equipment.
California recently passed a bill that requires all this kind of equipment being sold in the state to begin as early as 2024.
This new legislation for New York doesn’t mean you’ll have to give up the equipment you now own, but it merely says that anything new will have to be electric-powered starting in 2027.
