Rochester city students are back in class

Rochester, New York — Students in the Rochester City School District are back in class after a one-day delay.

Their return comes while the district continues to solve a transportation crisis.

According to Superintendent Dr. Lesli Myers-Small “As the buses are rolling, our transportation department s reviewing the routes to see how we might cover those that are still open, so we’re working very quickly to get that accomplished.”

Over 2,000 students had to find their own way to and from school due to a bus driver shortage – whether via other ride or walking before public buses can assist next week.

At this time transportation for more than 300 students remains in question.

“Not to say that’s a small number, because one student not having transportation is difficult and challenging, but we’ve worked and moved mountains to get to this point,” she said.

Meanwhile, an RCSD representative says the district has received nearly 100 applications for bus drivers. But, it could be about three weeks until applicants are hired and hit the road.
