Pittsford Wegmans is reopening while police look into the parking lot gunshot incident
Pittsford, New York – An early-morning shooting at Wegmans on Monroe Avenue is being looked into by the police.
Just after 9:20 a.m., deputies were called in in response to a complaint of gunfire in the parking lot.
Investigators discovered that as the man was waiting for his grocery delivery in the parking lot, a different car drew up and fired one shot, missing its target. There were no reported injuries.
“I don’t know for sure if (the vehicle) immediately left the parking lot or if it went to a adjacent parking lot, but it did drive away from the victim after immediately firing the round,” said Captain Kevin Schoepfel from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
At about eleven a.m., the lockdown on the business was lifted. At 1:00 p.m., the store reopened. A car linked to the event has been identified by the police.
“We are going through cameras from businesses in the area, cameras from the roadways, trying to see if we can pinpoint the actual route that the suspect took but we don’t have that information at the time,” Schoepfel said.
The victim’s car was towed while this was going on for processing.
“We want to do additional processing on that vehicle,” Schoepfel said. “That was the victim’s vehicle, so we are taking it to our facility so we can keep it out of the weather and go over it with a fine-tooth comb.”
Wegmans was praised by Schoepfel for his prompt reaction to the event.
“They did a great job calming people and just getting them to a place of relative safety where they were away from the front of the store, away from the windows,” he said. “They had the building locked down so nobody could get in or out, so they did a good job trying to put everybody’s mind at ease.”
