The Texas Department of Transportation’s commitment to safety takes another step forward with the Transportation Commission’s approval of a speed limit reduction along US 290 between Oak Hill and Dripping Springs. A recent study along this stretch of US 290 determined the speed limit could be lowered from 60 to 55 mph.

Speed limits are set through an engineering study that reflects the safe and reasonable speed of the majority of drivers on a particular roadway. In addition to speed checks, crash history, turning movements, and roadway conditions are also considered during the study.

On Monday, crews installed new speed limit signs and placed portable electronic message boards alerting motorists to the change.

In addition to the speed limit reduction, TxDOT is currently studying mobility and safety improvements on US 290 from Oak Hill to Dripping Springs.

TxDOT asks that drivers obey the new speed limit and avoid distractions while driving to help #EndTheStreakTX. Since Nov. 7, 2000, at least one person has died on Texas roadways every single day.
