New York study finds who has been hardest hit by COVID-19
New York – This week, state and federal health officials released a study, taking a closer look at the coronavirus pandemic.
The short answer to the question “who has been hardest hit by COVID-19 ?” is not surprising: Those who were vaccinated or had COVID-19 had a substantially reduced risk of being reinfected and hospitalized.
An important caveat with the study is that it took place before the Omicron variant ran rampant around New York and the U.S.
“This study conducted by our premier scientists continues to underscore the importance of vaccination as a critical tool in the COVID-19 response,” explained Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett. She co-authored the study. “Although the epidemiology of this virus may continue to change as new variants emerge, vaccination remains the safest way to prevent infection, hospitalization, and death. We continue to urge every eligible New Yorker to get vaccinated and boosted, wear a mask and take every step possible to protect yourselves and your loved ones.”
According to state officials, the unvaccinated had the highest risk.
Unvaccinated people who did not previously have COVID-19 were more likely to experience significant symptoms with coronavirus or require hospitalization.
