Man dies after accidental shooting
Rochester, N.Y. – A 67-year-old man has died Saturday morning at the Genesee Conservation League in Rochester.
Deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and EMS responded to the scene. Deputies said the victim died after the firearm was discharged accidentally inside the firearms club.
According to deputies, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene shortly after their arrival.
The Genesee Conservation League will be closed until further notice. The investigation remains ongoing.
The Genesee Conservation League released the following statement:
“On behalf of the Genesee Conservation League, I am deeply saddened to announce the loss of a longtime club member today as the result of an accidental discharge,” Board President Wayne Cichetti said.
“Our deepest sympathies are extended to this member’s family and loved ones. The individual involved in this tragic incident was a certified range officer serving as a safety officer in a United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) competition when he was struck by accidental discharge from a competitor’s firearm.
Since the League’s formation in 1925, safety has always been our most important priority. This is an extremely unfortunate accident and we are grieving the loss of a devoted member and friend.”
