Expect higher electric costs this winter, according to RG&E and NYSEG

Rochester, New York – The coolness in the air signals the arrival of winter, which typically results in higher energy costs. The prices for electricity and natural gas delivery services are anticipated to stay the same, RG&E and NYSEG wish to inform their consumers. However, RG&E claims that the price of natural gas as a commodity would increase.

To be clear, supply is entirely dictated by the market, according to Veronica Dasher from NYSEG and RG&E, who claims they have no control over it. In order to combat rising costs, they are enticing customers to implement conservation measures in their houses.

“What we’re looking at — it looks like there’s an average of $18 dollars more per month from December to March for electricity… and it’s also projected for $60 dollars more per month in gas due to supply pricing going up.”

Earlier this year, RG&E requested rate increases from the State Public Service Commission, which would raise delivery fees. Tuesday’s public meeting on this subject included requests to deny those requests from customers (details are in the document below).

Dasher wanted it known that all utility suppliers in the US are dealing with rising supply prices. Because of this, she continued, “we want to make sure we’re pushing choices like RGEsmartsolutions.com, where clients may obtain discounts. We recognize that customers are feeling the strain.”

In order to combat rising costs now and reduce your bills before the weather turns cold, they are urging customers to implement conservation measures in their homes.

“It can be using LED or energy-efficient bulbs, having a smart thermostat — we actually offer these on our website. Right now we have a promotion going on for smart LED bulbs for less than $3 dollars, which is really good- it’s economically feasible, and it helps to save money from incandescent bulbs.”

Another option they have is for customers to get budget billing. “And what that does is it at your past usage, your history, or the history of the home or apartment you’re in and it estimates what your payments would be over a 12-month period,” Dasher said.
